DH was craving Udon noodles tonight for some reason, so he asked me to google Japanese restaurants in the Reno-Sparks area. Folks, I'm here to witness that although there are dozens of sushi places in town, there are very few places serving the rest of Japanese cuisine. Hana was listed about 8th or 9th, and as it turned out it really is more Korean than Japanese.....but it had a few good reviews so we decided to try it....
It turned out to be definitely worth the visit.. Hana is tucked away in a small strip mall at the corner of Sullivan and Greenbrae in Sparks, definitely off the beaten track (although surprisingly close to where I live). It is small enough to qualify as a "hole-in-the-wall" but way too clean to be a "dive."
As I said before, the menu is largely Korean (as were the staff and most of the patrons), but there are some Japanese items on the menu. (Including, fortunately, Udon noodles). We started by splitting appetizers of edamame and a tempura appetizer. The tempura was delicious: a light batter, perfectly cooked....the appetizer portion was generous: it included several vegetables as well as a couple of pieces of calamari and two very large prawns.
For his main course DH of course had the vegetable udon. I never had a chance to taste it...he sort of bogarted that bowl. It did look good, and he gave it a thumbs up and practically licked the thing clean. A generous serving. I had the bimimbap in a stone pot .... (you can have bimimbap in a bowl for a dollar less...but the stone pot is very worth it....it kept the food warm and allowed for a wonderful crust of rice on the bottom of the pot at the end....). It had a nice selection of vegetables along with the ground beef, and the egg on top was perfectly poached. My meal was served with miso soup, which I couldn't even finish, and several dishes of various kimchees.....
Our dinner was under 30 dollars for the two of us, including tea. That's a lot of food for the price, and everything tasted great. Service was fast and friendly. We will definitely be back. They do serve beer and wine, but we didn't really look at the selection.
