We were planning to try out Saul's, but it was raining,and The Grocery was open in the spot were Rosita's place used to be on Smith Street. A block or two beyond President.
Menu is probably American, with duck, trout, skate, roasted chicken, skirt steak etc on the menu.
With all the new restaurants in the area, one becomes more critical than in the past, when anything opening was a welcome relief.
As you got ready to order, the chef brought out a small butter plate of very slightly pickled beets with Vermont feta cheese. The beets were all right but the feta is disappointing, especially when the real thing can be compared with it so easily. Sort of a chalky, hard texture and missing the flavor available up the street on Atlantic ave.
For a starter ordered duck confit with figs and greens. The pieces of duck were tasty, but the greens were dressed with a very light oil, and whatever else was added was too light to taste. Sort of the same problem with the beets. Just ended up being dull.
My wife had roast chicken and she liked that a lot. I had fried trout. The fish had good flavor, but the herbed spinach poured all over it gave the fish a lot of competition. Spratzle [sp?] with bacon was an interesting change of pace and the bacon gave good flavor.
We decided to skip dessert. The cost for two, without drinks, came to $44. They seem to have a liquor license and I think they took credit cards. But you need to check; an awful lot of the new restaurants in the area are doing cash only which is quite inconvenient.
Sad to say, but over all, with the other better choices in the neighborhood, we don't feel any pull to return.
