Gregoire take-out in Berkeley

Hi, everyone -

I'm back from our move into a new place - now I just have to go back and read all the postings from the last two weeks. Yikes! Pleasure and pain...

We tried a new place in North Berkeley last week called Gregoire, run by a French guy (named Gregoire, I hope). It's a teeny-tiny place in the spot where the never-open Stella's always was on Cedar just east of Shattuck. They have seating outside for about 6 people but it's mostly takeout.

I had the grilled vegetable sandwich with fresh mozzarella for $5.50, which was delicious. Open-faced with eggplant, peppers, and zucchini all done nicely and dressed with some tasty dressing (they say pesto on the menu - I guess that's what it was, but it wasn't overpowering at all).

Ali had the grilled shrimp salad on pantofolina bread for $7.00 - again, a hit! Very nice shrimpy taste and a light mayonnaise-y dressing holding it together.

Each sandwich is served with a tiny cup of slightly spicy cucumber salad, which I could take or leave.

Gregoire also offers several potato options - we chose crispy potato puffs but the chef (Gregoire, peut-etre?) told us the batter for those wasn't working that day so he substituted the potato nuggets. Wow! They're like whipped potatoes in a hush puppy format - crisp fried on the outside and soft in the middle, and not greasy at all! The only thing I would do differently is serve them with some kind of romesco or herb aioli instead of with just plain mayonnaise.

They change their menu monthly and you can check it out on their website (see below). They have a different dinner menu (more expensive, oh, well), too, that I'm going to have to try one of these days...
