This is by far my fave Sushi place in LA. Located on Melrose, just a tad West of LaBrea, it's a warm, familiar place to sit and have some prime sushi.
I can't believe I have never ordered omakase before. I think I was afraid I wouldn't have the chance to mention some of my likes and dislikes (with respect and within reason.) Having just voted, and feeling in a trusting mood, husband and I finally submitted.
Things started off with a lovely, delicate lobster tempura roll. Not some huge mayo soaked thing, but a soy paper wrapped delight, cut into small, manageable pieces and laced with a saffron sauce. Such a great and savory start.
The sushi came at a perfect pace, we were certainly not rushed, but we were never left waiting long either. Some selections I remember include bluefin tuna (a lovely, glossy red piece of fish.) Spanish Mackerel, Jumbo sea scallop (SO sweet and good!) Heavenly toro, Kobe beef which was very lightly seared and presented on rice, baby yellowtail, seared albacore sashimi, red snapper, and several others I can't recall. We were offered fresh wasabi as well as the powdered kind, a nice touch.
Other diners at the sushi bar were friendly and everyone would ask what we were eating, and we did likewise. It was great fun!
The omakase starts at $35, ours came to $42 a person, very reasonable. We were stuffed and the bill was actually a little less than when we order a la carte.
Also, I have to recommend the salt and lemon presentation they offer. You don't have to dip it in soy, the lemon and salt accent certain kinds of fish so perfectly. I wish more places offered this option.
