Grant Achatz, master of foam (see my epic review from about a year ago-- hey! I haven't linked to it in at least a month!), was named rising star chef of the year at the James Beard Awards yesterday.
By semi-coincidence, there's a piece on him in this week's New City, which makes it clear that if they didn't give it to him, it would only be because, like an actress playing an alcoholic Polish-Chinese hooker nun in a wheelchair, he was a little too obvious about wanting the award.
He actually sounds like a decent guy, just super-driven (not only by the idea of success, but by a very specific desire to be a name chef in the community of chefs). The guy who comes off a little less well is Charlie Trotter, who apparently has a policy of denying that anyone who worked at this place for less than a year worked there at all. (To be fair, I suspect he probably adopted such a policy after seeing too many people trading on his name after a week in his kitchen.)
Anyway, a little slice of Kitchen Confidential in New City, for fans of that book, and a genuinely deserved award for Achatz. Will it make his high art food more popular? Will it start filling his restaurant with out of town foodies? Well, at least it will probably improve the odds for his Food Network show, and that would probably make his restaurant a destination...
