I visited, for the first time, the Gotham diner on Sunrise Hwy in Merrick, LI this past Friday.
I ordered two eggs over easy, bacon, home fries.
My son ordered a shortstack of chocolate chip pancakes.
We received two plates of burnt offerings.
The place Looks nice. Clean. Service is friendly.
The quality of food seems to be better than most diners (in the area).
I have never sent a plate of food back to the kitchen before - Friday. A plate of two eggs O/E came, I looked at it and the waitress asked what was wrong. Looking at my sons crispy pancakes, I asked if I made a mistake myself in ordering. She said I ordered two eggs over easy with bacon and home fries. I looked at the plate again. I asked for the burnt eggs to be returned, for the first time in my life, and requested over easy. After some loud shouting at the grillman - "He want OVER EASY", "these ARE over easy", came the shout out from the kitchen -, the waitress brought me two eggs, somewhat done overeasy. Good enough. The shortstack of pancakes came three to a plate and were charged at $6, the regular order price. Burnt outside, somewhat done inside, and the choco chip side face down. What?
I just assumed that the grillman had his grill in 'rocket fuel' temps and to make it easy for him - quick that is - he slaps it on the griddle and burns two sides and serves it. Although this is a trend I find at most 'modern' diners, here it was a bit TOO much. I will try again, one more time, to see if this situation has changed.
Slow and easy wins the race. Even if I ordered eggs 'over well' I would not expect them to look as burnt as the overeasy ones did.
