a good time at Babbo

Thanks to everyone for the Babbo advice--I called the day of, and got a 9:30 rez, which turned out to be perfect. The reservationist also suggested calling back between 2-3 that day if I'd wanted to try for something earlier, since they have most of their confirmations/cancellations set by then. We sat upstairs, which was lovely--nice airy room with a skylight, plenty of room between tables. Started with very succulent roasted asparagus with a duck egg that was slightly overcooked. I think it would have been better more runny so that you could really get a gush of egg yolk and soft-set white over the asparagus. But the asparagus were so good, they almost didn't need anything. Then lovely whole bay scallops in the shell in a light garlic broth. I don't usally like scallops--too sweet and fleshy--but these were small and whole, and really delicious, more like a cockle or mussel that way. Goat cheese tortelloni--oh my god. Thin squares of egg pasta folded around a filling that was prob. 3/4 goat cheese, 1/4 butter, with a spark of orange peel and fennel pollen. Rich but snappy, and sooo good. Sliced duck breast with duck-confit leg (not very Italian, but good) over a barley pilaf--OK, not great, needed a tart sauce of some kind to bring it together, duck breast was bland and a little dry (much better duck at Chestnut last week). No room for dessert, but some little biscotti and treats came with the check. Mmmm.
