One very good meal, One very bad meal

My wife and I ate out Saturday and Sunday nights and went from one extreme to the other. Saturday night we had a wonderful meal at Figs, the lovely Morroccon restaurant in Fairmount. Everything was very good from the apps (Portobello Mushroom, Chicken Kabob) to the entrees (rack of lamb, pan-seared snapper) to the desserts (flan, cookies)to the coffee and espresso. It was packed and loud but had that NY cafe feel to me. Service was excellent and we had a lot of fun. The total bill came to $65, very reasonsable we thought.

On the way home I stopped for gas in East Falls and saw "Johnny Mananas" at Midvale & Ridge. It is a hip looking Mexican place and we just had to try a place called Johnny Mananas with a huge red chilli pepper hanging out front. Well, it was a bad choice and we obviously were taken in by looks alone. The appetizer of empanitas was so so but too clunky and doughy. The margaritas were the worst I've ever had, and at $7-8 tasted like they had no tequila in them at all! Entrees of scallops and carne asada were poor and $19.50 to boot! My steak (ordered med-rare) came out so rare that it was still mooing!(and was promptly sent back). The bill was more than at Figs and the meal was very disappointing.

Well, we went from culinary happiness into the food duldroms in no time flat. The after dinner drinks at The Standard Tap helped ease our depression. Next on our list to visit is Pagalle, the pretty French cafe in Northern Liberties.
