Good and cheap with no fridge.

Homelessness and hunger is a huge problem in my neighborhood. I am often asked for food while walking to the grocery store and wind up buying precooked chicken or sliced bread and lunch meat to hand off on the way home.
I thought a better idea would be to have a sort of picnic in a bag that I can grab on my way out the door to give before I get to the store. What are you best ideas for good and cheap meals I can assemble once or twice a week and keep in the pantry? Bananas and Peanut butter sandwiches are one idea, but what else??? Also, convenience might trump nutrition. It should be self contained, require no silverware or condiments (a ketchup packet or S&P packet is fine) and be something a hungry man would want to eat.
