This place, on N. Florida ave, has good food and a selection of baked goods. I tried it out saturday. Not only did my assistant and I want to check out their buffet, but we wanted to sample their hot patties and but some baked goods for a wedding party later that day. We braved terrible traffic (a signal was out an intersection away), parked across the street, and crossed Florida with the help of the almighty.
We received a very cool reception in the restaurant, though. None of the employees were friendly or particularly helpful. The lady at the register prides herself as being the slowest cashier in the US. We paid for 2 buffets ($7 a piece for lunch) and 2 hot patties. There were no patties available, and they said they'd bring them out to us.
The buffet was passable to good. The jerk chicken was only seasoned with a dry rub (no jerk sauce!), and tho the meat was good, it was very very dry. The beans and rice were dry and slightly hardened. The curry chicken was very good, however, the gravy was excellent, even if all the chicken seemed very fatty. The potatoes awash in gravy were excellent. Cabbage was good, mixed with carrots. The fresh buttered bread was soft, very good. The mac n cheese was a mix of some kind. The dumpligs in the soup were very tough, practically bulletproof, but the thick and buttery broth was excellent. None of the meats in the soup were edible, but must have added flavor nonetheless.
eating the soup was especially hard, since there were spoons available. we asked an employee for some, but she must have forgotten. i did not reveive the water i asked for. no patties came, either. They made and sold an entire batch of them (20+) without bringing us the ones we paid for. By the time we got spoons, the soup was lukewarm. What pissed me off the most (and i was sooo ready to like this place) was the impression that they didn't want us there at all. I just asked for the money back for the patties, as we were done eating.
I left without looking back, as i never want to go there again. after going out of our way to eat there, we were treated like jerks. Bulletproof dumplings, dry jerk, old rice, and Kraft mac n cheese just ain't worth all that. needless to say, i didn't buy any of their baked goods for that party...
