Today, #1 wife and I took a break from holiday shopping to have lunch at an old favorite of ours, Kuhn's Deli, which is in Deerbrook Mall. On the southwest corner of Lake Cook Road and Waukegan Road.
For those who have long memories, this is from the same family who ran Kuhn's on north Lincoln Avenue for many years.
It's a double storefront: one half is the deli with many German selections; also imported wines, dry goods and canned goods in the aisles.
The other half is a restaurant with about 50 seats. It's simply decorated, unpretentious, friendly.
The food is German deli (sandwiches, sausage plates) + a limited number of well-executed hot meals (listed under "specials").
A basket of bread and rolls is brought to the table before you order.
Today, my better half had the Cabbage Roll with German Fried potatoes (substituted for the usual boiled potato) ($7.50) which she pronounced excellent. I had my favorite -- goulash with spaetzle and red cabbage ($8.95). The goulash has a deep, rich flavor; the very good spaetzle is done al dente.
Other meals include Wiener Schnitzel (my wife's favorite) with German fried potatoes and either red cabbage or cucumber salad . At $10.95 it's the most expensive item on the menu. Also Fried Kasseler Rib (smoked pork chop) with potato salad and weinkraut ($9.95). Many sausage plates(I like the knackwurst).
There are both hot and cold sandwiches; also a soup and half sandwich combo. The sandwiches are mostly $4-6, though the lox is $9.95.
Desserts include several tortes, among them dobosh and Black Forest ($2.95).
Kuhn's has a good selection of imported beers in the cooler and you can have beer or wine from the deli section with your meal.
Owner/manager Andrew is nearly always there with a friendly greeting. He very accomodating and will readily make substitutions when asked.
Kuhn's is open for lunch. During the holiday season they also serve dinner (I think until 8pm). Best to call for hours.
