Gelato in Calgary

Over the past few years I've been making trips to Vancouver with one priority of eating gelato, especially in the gelato strip on Denman and most especially Mondo Gelato. There was nothing like that in Calgary, where I've lived the last four years, except rather thin gelato (homemade, but it's never impressed me) at Peppino's in Kensington and...hmmmm... the small selection of Mario's at Lina's Italian Market... and that was about it. Well, I returned from a trip to Buenos Aires (a city that absolutely eclipses Vancouver for gelato- it's on every block) and discovered a bright new place on 17th Ave (in the same building as the Mercury) called Fiasco Gelato, with 36 flavours (12 sorebettos), Illy espresso and good paninis. It's not the best I've ever had but some flavours are outstanding. The sorbettos (which to my experience are harder to screw up) are imaginative and clean tasting and the best gelato flavours I've had there are coconut (brilliant, their best IMHO), vanilla and pistachio.

So Fiasco opened in March and was such a roaring success that they opened a second location in June on 1st St SW downtown by Falafel King; THEN I note the opening of the first non-BC location of Amato Gelato, this in the old DQ on Kensington Road west of 19th St (I wasn't crazy about Amato in Van and not so here, but they do have a massive selection); THEN another gelato place opened this weekend in the new Currie Barracks Farmers' Market; THEN I hear about one that just opened near Marlborough Mall. Five new gelato places since March. Any reviews? Reflections? Any I'm missing?
