Our first time there - we dined in the back dining room although the bar area looked intriguing. Started off with app's of Crunchy Lobster Tacos (special app of the night) and Lamb Bacon and Eggs. The tacos were delish and were served with a "test tube" of a mango syrup to offset the spiciness of the taco along with a tall "shot glass" of sweetened coconut milk. The Lamb Bacon and Eggs was an interesting combuination of "shaved" fried lamb topped with a fried sunny-side up quail egg with chopped figs and "fried butterscotch" - all topped with a very savory black truffle oil. The fried butterscotch resembled tater tots - when crunched down on, warm butterscotch syrup oozed out. Unique but tasty.
Entrees were Grilled Marinated Hangar Steak with Pork Belly Tater Tots and the Signature Duck Confit. Both were perfect. The sweet rice that came with the duck could have been a dish all on its own. The steak was grilled to perfection and the pork belly tater tots were actually about 5 to 10 times the size of the "regular" tater tots - but this dish was so delish that all of a sudden I looked down and it was gone.
Desserts were a Warm and Gooey Chocolate Cake with Brown Sugar Pretzel Ice Cream and a Butterscotch Fondant with Black Truffle Ice Cream and Dried Strawberries. My cake came out in a ramekin topped with the ice cream but I think my cake could have been cooked more. Rather than gooey it was very runny like uncooked cake batter and the only place any cooked cake could be found was the corners of the ramekin. The ice cream was a perfect combination of sweet/salty and crunchy/smooth though. On the other hand, the Butterscotch Fondant was addictive. The middle was as sweet as the middle of a pecan pie (and texture was similar too). Verdict still out on the truffle ice cream. Not bad at all but still trying to decide how much I liked it.
Service was so-so. Host was perfect and the dishes came out in a timely enough manner for me but our waiter sometimes disappeared and our drinks would be long gone before he returned. Also, I inquired about the 36 hour ribs and he said it's been taken off the menu but next thing you know, after we placed our orders, the waiter at the next table offered the short rib as an app within a couple of minutes after my waiter said they no longer had them. I thought the next time our waiter came over he would mention this to me but we actually didn't see him from the time we were served our app's until after our dinner was servexd.
All in all, I thought it was a great evening at Gargoyles and we will definitely return.
