My son and I had lunch today at this place. I'd been meaning to go since reading a great review in the NYTimes many months ago.
This is a thoroughly Japanese place, which should appeal to those among you like to complain about "Asian fusion". There are lunch specials that change daily--there is even a calendar in the menu with which dishes will be specials by date. Although the sushi looked great and we both love it, my son and I each ended up getting cooked dishes. We had trouble choosing, and the photos that accompanied each item made it both easier to get a sense of what we would be in for, and harder to choose because we wanted everything!
Ultimately, he got the teriyaki chicken bowl over rice, which came with miso soup and a lovely small dish of Japanese pickles. I had the daily special of Champon, egg noodles in a whitish broth (not sure what made it white, but it wasn't a cream broth) with vegetables, squid, shrimp, pork, sliced fish balls, mushrooms, and four lovely quail eggs whose yolks burst in the mouth. Amazing to be thrilled to have a hot soup in the middle of July, but I was.
We were sorry we both had to work this afternoon, otherwise we'd have been glad to have $2 draft Kirins or $3 house hot sake. Instead, we had green tea and ice water that was refilled frequently. The bill after tax and before tip was $19.25.
I'm already plotting my next return.
