Dutifully responding to Chuck's recommendation, I drove down Flamingo to the Winn-Dixie shopping area just north of Miramar...I looked around for Friedman's, didn't see any signs immediately, and then came upon a directory in the parking lot that indeed listed Friedman's Bagels...I had come to the right place. I drove around a bit, and saw the word "Bagels" above the storefront. I parked, walked up, and saw, on the store window, white letters with the name "Aunt Mary's Bagels."
Friedman's is gone.
The name "Friedman" is more promising than "Aunt Mary" when it comes to bagels. For apple pie, OK, maybe Aunt Mary. But bagels?
Well, they looked pretty good, I was hungry -- it's a good half hour drive for me; where else was I going to go? -- so I bought a dozen (which turned into 18 given that there's a Wednesday special and, later upon inspection, it turned into 20 given that the clerk evidently didn't count well). And...they're pretty good! Much better than Bagelmania (I know, not much competition, but all I know from the area). I don't know to what extent they resemble Friedman's; I guess I need you, Chuck, to make it over there and let us know. But they make a fairly dense, chewy product; a nice bagel.
I did go to Bagelmania (Schwartz & Luigi's) on the way back to get some hand-carved sable and lox to go with Aunt Mary's!
