French 75's lounge menu review

Ah, the joys of dating. Spending money like is going out of style and eating decadently at places like French 75.

Did the lounge last night at French 75 in Irvine and sampled the menu for four of their dishes. Now note two glasses of wine each and four appetizers ran a cool c-note... $100. This is not the cheapest place and sometimes is very prohibitive to going back simply out of sheer financial pain, but the food is good. $100 good? Read on and see.

French sliders - think White Castle on the upscale. For $13 you get three mini hamburgers on brioche bun with a Roquefort dressing. The burgers are good, very good. The beef is top shelf quality and the cheese bites through the fat well. The chips that come on the side are so-so and weren't seasoned properly. Would I pay $13 again for this? Yes.

Pomes Frites - This review is unequivocal and there is no waffling on it. My date and I both agreed, if we couldn't find bliss between us over these heavenly pomes frites and red wine, then we weren't meant to be... These frites are great, but don't let them sit. No, don't dawdle; eat fast because after twenty minutes they aren't as good.

They have more than a hint of garlic, parsley and salt, are crisp to the tooth; delicious. Would I pay $12 for them again? Yes.

Spicy Ahi Tartare - This dish was good and nicely accented with sesame oil and seeds, which gave it a nice character. It was all eaten and we both enjoyed it, but worth the $14 price of admission? It only gets a maybe.

Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms - What can I say; this was the disappointment of the evening. It wasn't that it tasted horribly, was under seasoned or cold, it just felt like I'd been violated for the price. Two small mushrooms came on a plate (small mushrooms, let me emphasize this) stuffed with spinach and cheese... nicely spiced and seasoned, overall it had good flavor. However, four bites each later and our $13 was gone, leaving us unsatisfied.

We left happy and full, albeit a bit light in the wallet for a "lounge" experience. As always, the service was impeccable and the atmosphere spot on. But hey, I paid for it so it should be.
