Best food value in L.A.? (well, San Pedro really)

Several months ago I made a restaurant suggestion, but I buried it deep underneath a larger thread about breakfast near LAX. I revisited the restaurant this Saturday, and I was reminded that

a) This can be the cheapest meal in Los Angeles County and
b) This can also be the best and most satisfying meal in Los Angeles County.

First, the restaurant:

Tacos Jalisco
1202 S. Gaffey St.
San Pedro, CA 90731
(310) 832-0453/(310) 832-6156

They have good solid Mexican standards (tacos, etc.) but what my wife and I love are their Tacos Dorado de Papas...fried potato tacos.

Maybe everyone else on this board has had this wonderful creation many times before; for my wife and I, discovering this dish was a new experience.

Basically, they are just corn tortillas filled with mashed potatos, then deep fried and topped with copious amounts of shredded lettuce and cheese. They are basically like tiny little Mexican (savory) doughnuts.

How much? $1...for 2 tacos! That's better than Del Taco prices, for crying out loud. If you don't eat really fast (in order to make an end run around your brain's signals to your stomach to stop eating) 2 might even be enough. My wife and I have perfected a method where we can each get in about 4 tacos (and a full bowl of chips, of course).

We visit the restaurant with the same reverence I had previously reserved for Campanile...and in fact, we visit it for the same reasons. As it is a good 30 minute drive from our house, we go on special occasions or when we need a real treat. The potato tacos never fail us...

Go. Now.

P.S. As I have heard very positive mention of the food subcultures of San Pedro on this board before, we would be very interested to hear other S.P. suggestions...
