New in Flushing: Shanghai 33 Cuisine

Peter Cuce mentioned Shanghai Cuisine 33 (open now for about four months) in an earlier thread and I stopped in yesterday to check them out. I can report that likable Shanghainese food is being served up here by Cantonese folks who know what they are doing. It is operated by the same people who own Shanghai Asian Manor (21 Mott Street) and Shanghai Asian Cuisine (14A Elizabeth Street) in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Comparison visits are in order.

Steamed Tiny Buns with Pork (XLB) are thin-skinned, juicy and with a very generous portion of meat filling. A delicate Shanghai Wonton Soup features a favorite plant used by the Shanghainese: shepherd’s purse (荠菜 or 薺菜 - jì cài).

The Spicy Cabbage cold dish was overly sweet but if you got one of three chili peppers in your bite it helped. The appealing Camphor Tea Smoked Duck is served with hosin sauce. They have a couple of dishes on their menu that list boar but in reality it is pork belly. There are no round tables, the place seats about 46 and service was swift and neighborly. I can see trying Wine Chicken, Kau Fu, Bean Curd with Crab Meat and other Shanghai specialities on future visits.
