We went to El Celler de Can Roca after snagging a table for lunch about 5 years ago. It was newly relocated to the converted, modernized Mas farmhouse with the stainless, glass new wing imposing its reflection on the old structure. Thus we thought: traditional flavors with modern execution. Needless to say, we were blown away with our meal and experience. Since we were unable to snag a table at El Bulli, we told Chef Joan Roca that his current two star restaurant will definitely be a three star soon--no doubt.
In less than a year after our lunch at Celler, it got its third star. We knew it would be a good experience when we requested for the wine list and a bible cart was wheeled before us! The special wine "Murallas" by Torres cost merely $100/bottle! We have eaten at many other 3 star establishments in Spain and here in the US but nothing compares to our experience still at El Celler de Can Roca. The service was impeccable. The prices unreal for what you get! We toured the 50,000 bottle wine cellar complete with flat screen TVs inside to demonstrate each wine region. The tiered herb garden connects to the gleaming spotless kitchen that reminded me of our chemistry labs. And there was humble chef Joan Roca giving us a tour with our 7 year old. They even cooked a special meal for our kid--but of course with an over the top all-sheeps milk inspired dessert. Funny thing about their desserts, all the ones we tried with gelatos seem to defy science as not one had a droop of melted liquid around it. The spheres of ice cream are all perfectly shaped with no trace of melting!
We are hoping to return soon...hopefully as long as we can snag a table.
