So far this summer I had caught a few stripers, but none keepers (28" +).
In fact went fishing a few weeks ago before having dinner with some hounds at Dok Bua. Hoped I would catch a fish and get Dok Bua to cook it for all of us.
But today in Gloucester... Caught a 30" 9 pounder in the first 10 minutes of trying. Nearly broke my neck while landing him on the jaggy rocks. While keeping him cold and splashing around in a tidal pool in the rocks, I kept fishing just for the fun of it. I occasionally refreshed his little pool with buckets of fresh sea water. I wanted him as darn close to alive and flipping as possible.
10 minutes later I caught a respetably large fish 35 inches or so. Could barely haul him out of the water on the slippery rocks. He was so big he completely swallowed the huge hook I was using. His mouth was so big that I put my entire fairly large hand inside the bugger's mouth up to my wrist and extracted the hook from his gut. Let the monster go.
The smaller fish was coming home with me.
Without his head and tail, the small fish still did not fit in my biggest roasting pan.
Rubbed the whole fish lightly with Maille Dijon mustard. Then covered it with coarse cracked pepper, dill, taragon, and splashed EVOO over the whole mess. Baked the sucker for almost an hour.
Sweet, complex, delicate delicious. And a weeks worth of leftovers.
Washed him down with a couple of mojitos. Not a bad meal.
