It was Todai before it went downhill and closed. My favorite AYCE is Makino's in Las Vegas. Mr. Makino started the trend of AYCE two decades ago and was the original owner of Todai's in Santa Monica before he sold the chain to Koreans. He moved to Nevada and created Makino's with its two locations. One on Decatur Blvd. and the other at the Las Vegas Premium Outlet Mall. With the plethora of horrible, nasty AYCE places in Los Angeles, it's worth a trip to eat there when you are in Sin City. Makino' s still maintains the quality standards so lacking in most AYCE restaurants. The sushi is fresh and the hot food selection is also good. They have the cool chocolate fountain and cute desserts. Too many AYCE joints sacrifice quality over quantity. I haven't tried the Hokkaido Seafood Buffet which has now opened on the Westside, but I'm guessing it's not like Makino's. I noticed Makino's hasn't really expanded outside of Vegas. It's a smart move. Todai's expanded too quickly, the recession hit like gangbusters, and it's sayonara. I'd like to hear the experiences of my fellow Chowhounders on the good, bad and ugly of the AYCE world.
