I love farmers markets but rarely get to any. When we vacation in Wiscasset ME we try to get to Brunswick's on Fridays. We have a vegetable garden so fresh vegetables aren't a draw for me. Yesterday I was in Warner NH when I could visit the farmers market (Saturdays 9-noon). Only a few vendors but WOW. Some vegetable farmers are using season extending techniques so their vegetables are ahead of mine. Bought some frozen grass fed ground beef which we'll try later. Karen's Seafood was worth investigating esp because she had some samples of shrimp and corn chowder, another chowder, Mediterranean mussel salad and fresh tuna salad. She has recently started using a commercial kitchen so will continue expanding her offerings of prepared foods. The person who had raved about her haddock was back buying more which was what I had planned to do until I tasted the shrimp chowder.
Thick chowder (I thinned it just a tiny bit when I heated it up) with fresh tasting corn and unbelievably sweet, fresh tasting shrimp just barely cooked. Seasonings were very subtle. There might have been a bit of celery seed. A one pound container $9.99 was just enough for the two of us.
The mussel salad was worthy of serving company and so was the tuna salad. Definitely not canned tuna. The mussel salad contained some feta. Both tasted like they had only been marinating a short time so the fresh seafood taste was still predominant.
