English profs need to eat, too -- DC chow suggestions...

San Diego chowhound here. I'm coming to DC with three colleagues to interview job candidates at the Modern Language Assocication convention (aka, Super Geek Central). I would love suggestions for the following:

1. High-end blow-out dinner
2. Low-end, chowhoundy brunch/lunch spots (anything but Mexican--trust me, San Diego has that covered)
3. A good place for strong drink

I'm staying at the Wardman Park Marriot (up Connecticut a bit, near the Zoo). Will happily cab it for food, but don't want to stray too, too far.

I've been to Zaytinya and loved it, but would like to try something new.
I've had IndeBlu recommended, but am a bit sceptical.
Finally, I remember going to some take-out empanada joint in Adams-Morgan years ago, but can't remember what it was called or where it was exactly--any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help. Promise to report back and certainly to return the favor for any of you visiting San Diego.

Cheers!
