I have been noshing almost non-stop on Oaxacena food since saturday. Now that's fun. But we do not live on mole alone (or pico de gallo de camoron or roasted cactus, onions and jalepanos--I'm telling you the nopale asado is worth the price of admission at Tacqueria Oaxcana). We need to try the cusine of northern Mexico.
Zim asked me to plagarize my Lonely Planet World Food Mexico on norteno cucina or the food of northern Mexico. Here's what it says: "Donde se acaba la cultura y empieza la carne asada" Where culture ends and grilled meat begins. Some key dishes they describe for the north include:
carne asado/cabrito asada (roast meat/roast kid)
frijoles borrachos (drunken beans)
salsa bandera - i.e., red, green and white salsa
machaca - dried beef
tortillas del harina del trigo - wheat tortillas
Anyone know places to sample these dishes, please let me know.
