I've passed this place on 52nd St. between 8/9 Ave. (314 West 52 St.) many times, and wondered about the quality of the fare. Today, three friends and I sampled the $8.95 lunch buffet.
I'm afraid most of the offerings (chicken jalfrezi, lamb pasanda, a lentil stew, vegetable pakoras) were pedestrian at best, but the aloo gobhi, full of crunchy cauliflower and caramelized onions, was delicious, and the nan and rice were fine. The standout dish was the tandoori chicken, which was juicy and flavorful.
I can't call El Nido a destination restaurant by any means, but I could have built a nice meal out of the better dishes.
The service couldn't have been lovelier, including the owner's wife, who told us that besides providing Indian and Italian/pizza, they own Mi Nidito, the Mexican restaurant around the block on Eighth Ave.
Has anyone tried the pizza? It looked good.
