el fogoncito, los portales and the arepa lady

i have been looking for the "el fogoncito" taco truck ever since eric eto proclaimed that they had the most authentic carnitas tacos that he has tried in nyc...unfortunately, they seemed to be missing in action...

this past saturday, my friend and i took a little spin over to roosevelt and 73rd to see if the arepa lady was around...she was...and, she was at the very top of her game, btw...i don't think i've ever enjoyed piedad's arepa con queso more than i did that night...but, the real story is about what i found a little further down roosevelt...

as we passed 85th street, my friend asked me, "what was the name of that taco truck we always used to keep an eye out for?"..."el fogoncito," i replied..."we just passed it"...well, i doubled back and mentally prepared myself to stuff my already full and happy belly with at least one carnitas taco...

after two years of searching, here it was before me...and, it was good...certainly not like any other carnitas taco i've ever had before...the texture was almost creamy...even on a full stomach, it was pretty enjoyable...the pork had a little gaminess to it, but not so much that i found it off-putting...bottom line, i'd have it again...but...

my belly was full not only by virtue of piedad's arepa but also by the great tacos al pastor that i had at los portales in astoria (25-08 broadway)...those taquitos are quickly becoming a favorite of mine...i'm not saying they're better than the ones at taqueria coatzingo...although, truth be told, i find myself craving them more and when i've had the choice between the two, lately, i go to los portales...it could have something to do with the fact that they're closer to home, but i don't know...i just know i'm happy to have them around...they're helping me to get over the loss of tierras mexicanas...
