El Floridita

Like a professional athlete, being a pornstar requires not only physical agility but also a well tuned mental state. So at the end of the day, like a professional athlete, it’s time to relax and enjoy a meal with friends.

And so I imagined as my wife and I walked into El Floridita for dinner last night. Right in front of us was a table with about 6 girls and a guy. All the girls were wearing fake blond or red wigs and had very short skirts. Some had fishnet stockings, others various leather accoutrements, but they all looked like they spend their days doing something other than what I do. They were joking and laughing, and generally having a good time.

The host sat us with everyone else in the restaurant…on the other side of the room.

Wifey ordered the ropa vieja and I ordered the camarones (shrimp) in salsa roja (red sauce). After a spell, we got some warm bread with a light crust. It was very good. I like the bread we get in Cuban restaurants, as it’s not flavored. It’s not sweet, it’s not sour, it’s not garlicky or filled with herbs like rosemary. It’s just plain white-flour bread. It’s served along with a small bowl of freshly chopped garlic and oil. We also asked for the hot sauce, and they brought large squirt bottles of green (hot hot) and red (extra hot hot) sauce. It was good to try the bread in all three sauces. My favorite was the green, as it turns out I don’t need the “extra” in my hot hot.

Soon our food was brought out. Each entrée was served in a small casserole dish along with white rice and plantains. The ropa vieja was delicious. After my wife gave me a taste, I kept asking her for more. The consistency of the sauce was perfect: not too runny, not to gooey, just thick enough to stick to the meat and add the wonderful flavor. The meat, too was excellent. Stringy but tender, it had a certain firmness; but didn’t need so much chewing that you end up wringing the flavor out of it.

The shrimp was good, too. It tasted very fresh. I don’t know how restaurants do it. I can never get the shrimp to taste like this at home. As you bite into it, the surface offers some resistance, but as you bite harder, it gives way and explodes with flavor. The sauce was okay…nothing to really get excited about. It was good on the rice. But not as good as the ropa vieja sauce.

Rice was rice, and the plantains were overcooked and tough. I don’t think they were particularly fresh. This may be due to the small number of people in the restaurant on a Thursday night.

The pornstars left about halfway through dinner, which was good as they were a bit loud (after a rough day on the set?).

All-in-all, a good meal, and cheap. It came to $23 for both of us before tip.
