Tried this recently opened sushi bar in the old space that used to house a vegetarian Indian restaurant - its cavernous and upstairs in a strip mall a couple of blocks west of Bundy on Santa Monica. We were the only customers and after having scaled the protests of the two hostesses who greeted us with - there are no rolls here, no California rolls, this is traditional sushi only, we ploughed forward and sat up at the bar. This is omnicase (excuse spelling, I am still dazed by a large portion of saki). Toshi the sushi master formerly of Sushi ? in Tarzana gave us the most wonderful experience, very very fresh fish - it came a bit fast but I guess we were the only guests until another couple showed up who knew Toshi from his previous restaurant.
Upside - great quality (tab was $63 including saki for two) and interesting and involved master. Downside: too much lettered signs - we don't serve rolls; children cannot be at the sushi bar; we only serve tradional sushi, etc. and gawking waitresses (I turned to one and said, I promise not to stare when you are eating Fish and Chips). Charming tea mugs and sushi plates, obviously carefully chosen.
Its open for lunch too - a $10 special.
