The Eater 38: What are New York's core restaurants

Dunno if you folks have been reading NYC restaurant blog Eater (eater.curbed.com; Eater's certainly a fan of Chowhound.) But they have an interesting proposal: developing a list of 38 restaurants "that define New York City's eating culture".

38 is a completely arbitrary number. The idea is that the dining "scene" in NYC is dominated by new restaurants, but those places don't really represent the city's core. I post this here because **this** crowd will probaly have a much different idea of this than less adventureous folks.

The most obvious list would start with 3 Danny Meyer restaurants, 2 Jean Georges, etc. But that’s not where I’d start. I’d be thinking about the places with truly **amazing** food, like Tehuitzingo in Hell’s Kitchen or DiFara’s or Jewel Bako or The Tasting Room or Salt, rather than big, theatrical places known more for service and scene.

So what restaurants do YOU think “that define New York City's eating culture"???
