Just in time for summer in Chinatown, you can now purchase in frozen form that "hot" heavy of Southeast Asian fruit- durian ice cream at the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory!
A recent addition, I'm told it just debuted last Friday. When I caught the small announcement on a metallic rainbow hidden behind the counter, looks were exchanged and my attending scooper deferred to his colleage. Yes, even frozen in dairy the stuff is potent!
Flavor was heavier on the funky, creamier aspect of durian, at the expense of the acid tang. Not a bad thing, necessarily. No chunks of fruit, and the ice cream's texture wasn't as smooth as I would have liked (at times it was almost like sorbet).
Still, the King of Fruit has arrived where he belongs. Long live the King!
