I had dinner at Viceroy on Friday with three friend from work.
I had recommended it since it's literally around the corner from my apt.
My friend ordered a drink and after receiving it from the waiter said that it did not contain the band of vodka he had requested. The waiter insisted that it did. We thought he was crazy and attemping to display some sort of knowledge he had for vodka (he doesn't have much). He requested a second drink and once again he said it was not the vodka he had requested. He confronted the waiter and was then told that they had run out of the requested brand so they used another top shelf vodka. My friend was furious and asked to speak to the manager. The manager informed us that it was the norm for the bartender to use another vodka of equal quality if the requested type was out of stock.
My friend argued that this was equivalent to ordering wine and having it switched... I'm not sure I necessarily agree with that comparison. I do however believe that he should have been told that they were out of the requested brand when they served him his first drink. He told the manager he refused to pay for his drinks. The manager told him he had to pay since the drink he was served was of the same quality.
In the end I paid for his drink and I was embarassed about the situation and that I recommended the restuarant.
