Downtown (Chinese) Buffet

Looking at its ads and other promotional material, the new Downtown Buffet in the Baldwin Hills Plaza seems like a Hometown Buffet type of place with a couple of Chinese menu items thrown in. In fact, it's a full blown Chinese buffet with just a few non-Asian items included. Obviously we're not talking San Gabriel Valley quality stuff here, but given its distance from any Chinese nexus this place is surprisingly good. Indeed, visually Downtown Buffet is similar to the San Gabriel valley Chinese buffets with padded booths and high back designer chairs. It comes complete with teppan grill and sushi area, and while the food has been somewhat dumbed down, there is some pretty good stuff there, including an excellent version of steamed sole, mei fun, spicy squid, baked salmon and dry fried string beans, to name a few. I'm not suggesting that this is another Crenshaw Blvd. destination location like Stevie's or Tasty Q. However, if you're looking for Chinese buffet fare and are located downtown, mid-Wilshire, Hollywood, Culver City or anywhere else in the center city area, this is undoubtedly your most convenient and best bet. Downtown Buffet is on the second level on the mall, towards the Stocker Ave. end of the mall, across from Sears.
