A few weeks ago I made a lunch stop at Daimo in Richmond for the first time in a couple years. I wanted to see how it was faring with the reopening of Saigon Seafood Harbor a stone’s throw away. It was pretty busy for early lunch hour.
But sad to report that the wonton mein (shrimp dumplings with noodles in soup) are not what they used to be. Five big ones on a skein of skinny noodles but the broth was not as orangey-colored as it should be and boosted with too much MSG. The wontons themselves were still giant but had smaller and fewer whole shrimp in the filling. The shrimp were softer rather than having the characteristic firmly toothsome texture of the best examples. Also, I had to search to find the yellow leeks, maybe there were three small pieces.
