I recently posted that my experience at the WeHo Doughboys was less than friendly....they were wierded out by the solo diner, etc. I was not inclined to go back to WeHo, but I was willing to try the newer location in Hollywood (you know, since Oprah loves it so darn much-hahaha).
Needless to say, the Hummingbird Cake was as divine as described. Yes, the frosting was fab...thick, tangy, sticky cream cheese perfection. There had to be an inch of it atop the round delight. But the cake itself was also wonderful, with just the right blend of walnuts, bananas and something else (citrus? coconut?) It was not dry at all and was quite dense (just like I like it). It was neatly wrapped in plastic around the circumference of the cake, which helped maintain the placement of the frosting. The $5.50 price was totally appropriate as it comfortably feeds 2.
Also surprising was the refreshing atmosphere of the cafe. After my experience at WeHo, I was expecting indifference if not attitude. But all 3 of the employees with whom I interacted were pleasant and helpful, chatting me up and asking if I needed anything else. One employee was proactive when assisting me with questions about special-order cakes. The employees did not seem to mind patrons sitting at the tables after only ordering pastries as opposed to a full meal. The interior seating area was filled with light and was attractively housed in an "exposed brick" style room. Excellent.
Recommended. I only wish I had been able to try more of the treats!
