Was out at Zuzu last night with a group of 5 others.
I haven't been to Zuzu at least two years, but was looking forward to going as in the past I had really enjoyed some of the mezze apps. and the tequila lime shrimp entree in particular.
Bottom line is that the chef or concept must have changed as the menu was similar to what I recalled, but everything ordered was poorly presented, (as in gloppy sauces and uninspired sides slapped on the plates) just kind of sloppy and not too exciting. Luckily, the entrees top out at ~$15.00, but the reasonable price point was showing in a negative way...
(Maybe we would have done better with ordering a bunch of mezze as those still looked good and seemed to be what most tables were getting....but I did not succesed in convincing my fellow diners.)
Only appetizer we ordered was hummus, which had a very oily texture in addition to being unattractively topped with flavorless olive oil and brownish (why?) bits of green bell pepper. Ick. Tasted only tahini and not a blend of chickpeas/garlic that is what hummus should be.
Ordered the grilled salmon with yogurt sauce as an entree. Overcooked filet, covered in a gloppy,
semi-curd-ly yogurt sauce, with no discernible subtlety or sophistication in seasoning besides...yogurt... Rice-A-Roni-ish pilaf alongside and over-blanched green beans. Tasted a friend's tequila lime shrimp dish and that too had been similarly dumbed down. Everything on her plate looked wan, almost as if it was out of cans and boxes... Heard similar complaints from previous visitors in my group on a steak dish and a stuffed eggplant with lamb dish.
Anyway, wish that this place was still good in some respects, as it's a cute room and a good concept, but I think they used to do far better.
