My wife and I drove over for dinner Friday night. Had heard/read good reviews so took a ride. She had the beef brisket dinner with collards and fried okra- I had the pork belly sandwich and potato salad. Tea to drink.
She said the collards were as good as she's ever had- also really liked the okra. However, the brisket was terrible... extremely fatty and gray! Quote from her- "Rudy's (Texas) would never serve meat like this." The fat ran right through the middle of the slices and there was easily as much fat as meat. An could watch them cut your brisket at Holy Smokes in Garner (now defunct, sob) and they always trimmed that fat away before serving. Color was much better also!
The pork belly was very good- tender and succulent. Overall, though, they ruined the sandwich by putting it on an ice-cold bun. If they don't ever steam their buns, shame on them. If they just didn't steam mine, still shame on them. Potato salad was almost inedible- had some pink runny sauce that the chunks of spuds sat in. Only after taking the potatoes out of the sauce? and mashing them could I get some down.
Best part of the meal was the chocolate cake we took home for later.
In summary, good idea for a restaurant, poor execution. Doubt we'll be back.
