After the strong recommendation of elmomonster, I had dinner last night with my Japanese friend at Kappo Honda in Fountain Valley. We arrived at 6:15 and were promptly seated as soon as they cleaned the table. About 3/4 of the clientele last night was Japanese. My friend really like the atmosphere which she said was just like what you'd expect from a yakitori restaurant in Japan, except for the music they were playing. It sounded like what they would play on KROQ, e.g. Hoobastank. As for the menu, we were quite impressed by the large selection and had a somewhat difficult time deciding what to order. I've eaten at Musha in Torrance and Santa Monica which is very good. The menu there though was more Japanese fusion izakaya and not as big.
Everything we ordered last night was great! We had tuna shashimi, fresh oysters, tako kimchi (octopus), grilled Japanese beef steak and grilled duck. As for yakitori, we ordered:
chicken leg with Japanese green onion (4)
shiso chicken with Japanese basil (2)
shitake mushrooms (2)
aspargus wrapped with pork (2)
tsukune meatball (2)
I finished with a bowl of soba with grilled beef. My friend is on a low carb diet and for the most part, everything we ordered was low carb except for the soba which I had. When we left about 8, there were a few groups standing by the door waiting for tables.
Dinner for two with 2 bottles of house sake came to $65, not including tip. I will definately come back. I just wish they had a menu I could take home so I know what to order next time before I sit down.
