We enjoyed it and would go back. The popup is in a nondescript little restaurant in the lower Haight. We had not been to the Haight in ages and we had not been to the lower Haight even longer. Before dinner walked around. It felt like we had walked onto the set of the TV show "Girls" and we felt kind of old surrounded by so many 20 something's. But I loved the youthful vibe and energy of the place, lots of cool shops and people were very warm and friendly. I didn't realize the lower Haight had evolved into such a cool little neighborhood. Onto the restaurant. It was BYOB, and we brought a nice Spanish Red. I loved the vibe of the restaurant. Very laid back, unpretentious and un-yuppyfied. Here is what we ate:
Gwen Avocado, Beets, House Cheese Orach, Navel Orange, Croutons. This dish was excellent. Very well balanced and flavorful. I had never heard of Gwen Avocados before. They are a hybrid and Hass avocados are one of the patents. The avocado was much better than the mediocre Mexican and Chilean Hass ones I have been getting lately. The creaminess of the avocado paired perfectly with the beets, orange and cheese and the acid of the dressing brought everything together. I thought it was an outstanding salad.
Brussel Sprouts, Butter Beans, Preserved Lemon Almonds and Parmesan. This also was excellent.
Lamb Shoulder and Spiced Banana SquashConfit Garlic, Cranberry Beans, Fenugreek Leaves. I liked this but not as much as the other dishes we had. The squash was kind of meh. The seasoning which featured cinnamon, seemed a bit one dimensional. Could have benefited from a touch of chile pepper and/or cumin? Husband liked it more than me.
Fort Bragg Rock Fish with Celery Root and Brussel Leaves
Fennel, Lardons, Meyer Lemon Froth. This was outstanding. The fish was perfectly cooked and delicious.
All in all we really enjoyed the meal and will be going back.
