I hit Difara's the Sunday before last on my way home to the Washington DC area and it really points out how bad the pizza is down in DC.
I got there the minute his son unlocked the gates and I ordered a rabe and mushroom pie. Dom said he didn't think that would be good. I asked what he would get and he said rabe and sausage. Sold.
Pretty funny scene. While waiting a long time for the toppings to get sauteed, me and two or three other folks were waiting for our orders and when he pulls that first pie out of the oven for slices there's no way to resist. The funniest part was the audable gasps when he pulled the square pie out of the oven. It looked unbelievable, but I resisted and stuck with a plain slice until my pie was ready.
It had been a couple of years since I was there last, and I forgot just how perfect his pies are and how great they taste. Truly an institution that I hope to hit again when I'm near NY.
The pies were worth it. Now the $9 toll to cross the Verrazano bridge to get on the turnpike heading home......
