Devi Review (Long)

My best friend took me to Devi last night for my birthday...and it was the best b-day dinner I've had since my first meal at Lespinasse 8 years ago.

We loved the place, fantastic ambiance and decor. The bar was really sweet...tables for larger parties swathed in silk in the back. We sat upstairs where there was still plenty of room and intimacy.

Our waiter was fantastic...super enthusiastic about the food, sensitive to our interest/aversion to spiciness, generous and friendly. He knew the menu very well.

We opted for two tasting menus. The vegetarian for my friend and the carnivorous for me.

The amuse bouche was delicious but very spicy.
First course: Scallops were delicious
Second Course: Delicious stuffed chicken shared with my friend's somosas...all full of vibrant interesting flavors..
Third Course: A huge meaty prawn paired perfectly with the house specialy for my friend: cauliflower in Ketchup...unreal...redefines the cauliflower category.
Fourth Course: Halibut steamed in a banana leaf with a green sauce (not sure what it was...kinda nutty and mild)
Fifth Course: Can't remember but served with crispy fried okra that were like french fries.
Sixth Course: One lamb chop with mint chutney...Could barely eat any more by that point. But of course had room for...
Seventh Course: awesome Mango Cheesecake

Also a delicious onion and parmesan nan...the best nan ever!

We sat next to Chowhounder FoodDoc and his buds and had an awesome time...A great place to celebrate or just have great interesting Indian cuisine. Blows Tamarind out of the water. Still different from the great Tabla...but more authentic Indian spices and dishes.

Highly recommend!
