The "Cat is Back" is the headline for the restaurant; but at this rate, not for long. I live near the restaurant and decided to go there last night after reading a recent review. Expectations were not that high to begin with, but still left disappointed.
The restaurant, which previously housed the original installment of Standard, was drab, poorly lit, and almost completely empty on a Saturday night. The menu had few items on it and most were a rehashing of '80's faves. Our waitress was frazzled from the beginning despite our table being the only one she was serving.
The wine list, though sparse, seemed to have some very well-priced out of the ordinary wines. The wine list's creator is the same person that used to head the Green Room. Unfortunately, the wine that we ordered was not available, so we had to settle for our second choice .
As for the food, it left a lot to be desired as well. I ate the pork chop stuffed with black forest ham, smoked gouda, and jalepeno. It also seemed to be a bargain at $13. The chop might have been alright had it not been swimming in what tasted like store bought bbq sauce. When we got the bill, we were charged $15 for the entree. While an extra $2 is not a huge deal in terms of cost, I do not appreciate restaurants trying to nickle and dime customers by sneaking extra costs on the bill.
All in all, the restaurant did not even live up to our lowish expectations. This place seems doomed to shutter like many other Deep Ellum restaurants before it.
