DeBreaux's lunch review

Based on the Hilton City Ave thread (see below), we went to DeBreaux's (Overbrook Train station) for lunch today. Great fried chicken (with the skin off and fried to crispy perfection separately - mmmmmm), terrificly cheesy mac and cheese, delicious warm corn bread, tasty collards, and to-die-for beef short ribs in BBQ sauce (very saucy, fyi). In portions that you cannot believe.

Frances (the owner) was personable and chatty and generally lovely to meet. She made our son chicken fingers the size and quality of which we may never see again (she said those were small!).

Sweet tea was too darn sweet, but I find that's the case much of the time. Those southerners can really handle sugar in a way I can't.

Only downside was the wait. It says on the menu "soul food isn't fast food" and I agree with the sentiment and the reasons behind it, no doubt. But for lunch, when we were the only ones there and I had to get back to work, it was pretty slow. We'd been there an hour before all our food was out. Thoughtfully, the meal for my son came out as soon as it was ready (first) but then mine came out 10 mins later and my husband's 15 mins later.

The price was higher than we expected (over 40 including tip) but you should see how much we brought home in leftovers! I mean, it's at least $20 worth of takeout food, so that makes the price really reasonable for a family lunch out.

I would highly recommend the food and would do take out from here without a doubt. Just don't go if you've got any time constraints at all.
