Had to throw this one out: On the way down US 1 in Hobe Sound last Sat., and (as all hounds do) spot this place CW's BBQ a mile N of Bridge Rd.
My first clue that I might be on to the real thing was that there were two commercial establishments in this dusty-parking-lot building....a pawn shop and the barbecue place. Clue number 2 - There was a thick brown patina on everything inside (including the two ladies behind the counter!). As I was waiting in line (only 1 person ahead of me with a not-large order and still took 10mins), I spotted clue #3 which cemented the deal: One of the girls went out the back door, revealing the huge outdoor smoker: The clincher was a tray of raw chicken sitting out there on a stump. If ever I was re-assured that I had stumbled on the right side of the BBQ trail...that was it.
Ribs, chicken, chopped pork sandwiches, all served in a smoky atmosphere that usually means it'll taste even better there, though I got take-out. Huge trays of cornbread and cherry-covered something laying right in front of you waitng to be cut off and added to you order.
Verdict: I had the chopped pork sandwich and sides of red beans + rice and mac + cheese (they were out of turnip greens). Chopped pork was as good as it gets - smoky and tender, dark thick sauce oozing over a pile of steaming pork that would make any heart doctor flinch.
Red beans and rice were somewhat spicy and a little fatty, though its hard to tell in a 'small side' size. Mac and cheese was homemade and will make you steer away from Kraft forever.
I cant wait to go back: I'm definitely working my way through the whole menu in this joint.
