To settle a longstanding and goodnatured debate with a visiting out of town fellow burrito-lover, on Saturday we hit Taqueria Can-Cun on 18th. I am a Farolito Man, he is a Can Cun devotee.
After the dust settled, even he had to admit it was no contest.
We opted for the Chicken burrito as a point of comparision.
First of all, in contrast to Farolito's lovely and clean-tasting white meat, we were subjected to a cluster of unninteresting, rubbery and oily thigh meat. I am not opposed to this cut in other dishes but have never understood why it is served in a burrito beyond profit margin considerations.
The rice was mushy and the avocado sparingly inserted. Hot salsa was absent as was generally taste. Black beans were a highlight, good flavor but this bright note just overshadowed by the just untasty green salsa, too many onions/cilantro and an uninteresting heat. Can-Can's green couldn't carry water for the magnficient Farolito green, with its tomatillos and creamy avocado.
There are few things more disappointing than opening up that silver cylinder and finding an untasty burrito. Am I missing the boat at Can Cun? What is their specialty? The long lines there would seem to indicate they are doing something really well, I'd just like to know what it is. It certainly isn't their Pollo Burrito.
