There is a great guidebook for touring the backroads and scenic byways of western North Carolina called "The Craft Heritage Trails of Western North Carolina. It is published by a group based out of Asheville called Handmade in America. http://www.handmadeinamerica.org/
While the book's focus is on the rich craft heritage of this region, it also includes a nice selection of cafes, bakeries, coffee shops and historic inns. I have found it to be a great source for local day trips and weekend journeys.
I noticed in their list of publications a book on Agricultural Tourism...I might need to check that book out as well.
