Craft Downhill?

Mark Z | Oct 21, 2004 09:41 AM

I went to Craft last night, for the umpteenth time and was not so excited with what I tasted. I am hoping that it was an off night, but most of the dishes were not flavored very well and the seasonings were off.
The three dishes that did hold up to past experiences were the scallops, chicken, and foie gras (with an oarnge rind confit). All of which were prepared so simply, and wonderfully which is what they do best, but the other dishes missed the mark.
First was a crab-microgreens salad with truffle vinagerette. This dish was totally over the top and almost annoying. The crab was delivered live in the morning in a container containing live sponges and pumped full of oxyegen to keep the crabs alive.... and then the dish was totally overpowered by the truffle vinagerette. The crab was amazingly tender but the flavor was masked.
The mushrooms that are always amazing were totally oversalted and they were nice enough to comp us.
The braised short ribs, himachi, and gnocchi also all missed the mark. The first two were rather bland and the gnocchi was amost mush.
Maybe the kitchen staff were too busy watching the yankees game, but it was a very dissapointing meal.
Anyone else experienced this or was it a fluke? I have usually enjoyed Craft, but wouldnt be back if this is the direction its going.
