i finally made it.
based on the information i have, this appears to the only south Indian non-vegetarian restaurant in the bay area (i could be wrong). it's located on the same block as udupi palace and virtually next door to woodlands. the sad thing is, by and large, it pales in comparison to both places.
the chicken biriyani, a house specialty, was tired, clumpy and the grains of rice were mushy. tender chicken on the bone couldn't rescue the poor thing.
a salad of peas, mango and coconut sounded intriguing but arrived with intensely dried-out peas and only a smattering of mango.
on the plus side, coromandel curries offers items i've yet to find at other south Indian places. idiyappam, fresh rice vermicelli, was a nice change from the ubiquitous dosa. similarly, appam, a yeasty dosa, went perfectly with a coconut mutton curry. the seven taste dosa was a pleasant change of pace-- a huge dosa accompanied by seven dipping sauces. the idlis weren't bad, though i prefer a more granular version-- these resembled masa dough for tamales. the kara kulambu, a hot and sour vegetable stew, saved the meal.
there's more to mention, but it was too disheartening. the staff was extremely pleasant, and a lunch buffet was being served concurrent with the full menu. maybe the buffet was where it's at?
