Having a rare leisurely weekday morning this morning, I decided to hop in my car and drive up to Dat Donut to see what all of the fuss was about.
Before I begin, you should understand two things. I was born and raised in the south where Krispy Kreme was a Sunday noon ritual reward for having sat quietly through Sunday Services for as long as I can remember back in my childhood. In other words, I was bred on them. Second, I'm not a huge donut fan...until now.
Arriving at Dat, I decided to go for a two fister with coffee. I chose a jelly filled vanilla Bismarck and an incredibly good caramel glazed.
The thing that sets Dat apart from its competion is the pastry itself. It's light and airy, the consistency of a cross between a well made crueller and a croissant (though not buttery).
The Bismarck was enjoyable although the great majority of the filling ended up on my shirt and chin rather than in my mouth. In my opinion, filled donuts are the bastardized cousins of pure glazed or plain donuts. It's in the plain or glazed donut that the maker's art can shine through.
Now, this caramel donut is going to prove to be quite a dietary challenge going forward. The light pastry is topped with a sweet ring of milky carmel that is a true caramel lover's delight.
