I want to take my boyfriend out for a drink the evening before his birthday, and need advice.
The man: A guy in his 30s who loves classic cocktails, classic New York, and appreciates stylish/elegant spots, but loathes places that are overly "scene-y" or too loud. He enjoys fine bourbon and single malt scotch, and likes chatting with bartenders (as do I).
I want to take him somewhere where the drinks are great, the bartenders competent, and the atmosphere fun and grown-up. Somewhere where we can have a conversation and won't be shoved and bumped into, or have to yell to hear each other. Somewhere potentially - but not overtly - romantic (nothing theme-y please.)
Angels' Share is out - we're not fans. The Campbell apt. would have been fine but is too smoky, and they play corny music.
A hotel bar would be fine so long as it meets the above criteria.
Location: Anywhere south of midtown (including midtown - east or west).
I've never been to Temple Bar, but is it VERY "sexy"? I don't want to create an atmosphere of romantic expectation (like I want him to propose or something - god forbid!), more of relaxation and enjoyment.
