Had a surprisingly good meal last night at Citarella Restaurant. I was the one who chose the place (from Opentable.com on short notice), and after reading mixed reviews, I was a bit skeptical. My expectations weren't so high, but I didn't have time to call around to find another place.
Anyway, we sat on the second floor, and I liked the fact that there was a nice amount of space between the tables. The room was attractive and felt comfortable.
For an appetizer I was deciding between the crabcake and the goat cheese terrine. The waiter suggested the crabcake, and it did not disappoint. I thought it was great. My mother-in-law got the goat cheese terrine, and she enjoyed that very much. Father-in-law got a salad of some sort, and my husband ordered yellowtail sashimi. My husband didn't really care for his appetizer--the yellowtail was sliced "too thick" for his liking. When the waiter passed by to see if everything was okay, he noticed that the yellowtail was barely eaten, and asked if something was wrong with the dish. My husband felt a bit awkward, but said that although there was nothing "wrong", he just didn't care for it. The waiter offered to bring him a different appetizer. My husband kept saying that it was not necessary, but the waiter almost insisted, in a nice way, and my husband ended up ordering the crabcake. I thought that was really very nice of the waiter.
For entrees, my husband and I both had the black cod, M-I-L had a lobster dish and F-I-L had grilled pompano. Everyone enjoyed their dishes, particularly the pompano.
The only dessert that I tasted was the chocolate "devil dog", which was very tasty.
The service was very good, and the waiter was especially nice. Hopefully my (frugal) F-I-L left more than his standard 15% tip, because this waiter really deserved more.
I certainly wouldn't say that this was the best meal I've ever had, but I really thought that the overall experience of the place was very enjoyable.
